<Mangroves>

International Society for Mangrove Ecosystems (ISME) is an international scientific NPO/NGO inaugurated in 1990 and seated in Okinawa, Japan. Since then, ISME has been carrying out its activities at global level to restore and conserve mangroves, to conduct research and trainings, and to collect and disseminate mangrove related information.

Project Summary

Mangrove forests growing in coastal areas of Mauritius are among the few remaining natural forest ecosystems in the country, where the natural environment has changed significantly. These forests are small in area, scattered, and quite a fragile ecosystem. Oil pollution caused by the Wakashio grounding incident in 2020 greatly affected part of these coastal ecosystems. Triggered by the incident, NGOs and local communities gained a deeper appreciation of the importance of mangrove ecosystem conservation, and started taking various actions, but their academic knowledge and experience are limited. This application is for contributions to creating mangrove forest conservation and regeneration manuals and guidelines related to sustainable utilization and application of the forests, with the objective of human resources development through cooperation with community-led activities and technical support. Meanwhile, this project is implemented both on site and remotely based on current conditions given the COVID-19 pandemic, and we will disseminate the results of our mangrove ecosystem protection and restoration measures in hopes of providing a model approach for neighboring Madagascar and Seychelles.

The results of the research project funded by the MOL Mauritius International Fund - Two papers were published in 2023, Vol. 14 of MANGROVE SCIENCE.
