Currimjee Foundation

<Coral reefs>

The Currimjee Foundation is a charitable institution through which the Currimjee Group's CSR activities are deployed. Its actions are based on two strategic pillars: poverty alleviation and environment preservation. Alongside several social inclusion projects, the Foundation carries out several terrestrial or marine ecological projects to preserve and restore the environment.

Project Summary

The project will enable the restoration on a larger scale (100m2) of the marine ecosystems in the lagoon of La Cambuse, preserving the endangered marine biodiversity, protecting the livelihood of local people and hinder beach erosion. The coral farming technique to be used has been defined based on a scientific biodiversity survey and a successful coral farming pilot project previously carried out for the region. Artificial structures (100 spider frames made of galvanized iron bars and 300 concrete blocks) will be introduced in the sea due to the absence of natural substratum for coral fragments transplantation and to promote natural recruitment. They will also act as wave breaker and habitat for fish populations. Broken coral fragments from the sea floor of nearby lagoons (3 to 5 species) will be collected for transplantation as it is a non-destructive method and the species selected will be adapted to the physicochemical parameters of the region. Additionally, a small scale study on the propagation of seagrass to further support the marine ecosystem and which is known to be an efficient carbon sink, will be implemented. A scientific monitoring will be also carried out to assess the survival and growth of the transplanted fragments and natural recruits. To ensure the sustainability of the project, awareness sessions will also be organized for local communities (fisherpersons and skippers) and schools, an awareness mobile App on coral ecosystems will be developed to raise awareness on the Mauritian marine ecosystems.
