Project Summary

Based on a scientific understanding of the impact of the grounding incident on the coastline, we will work to address uncertainties in aquatic resources and solve issues regarding their usage as a shared resource, which have been problems for communities who depend on the coastal fishery in Mauritius since before the incident, and achieve significant improvement in fishery business management. Based on sustainable use of aquatic resources and development of value chains backed by a thorough understanding of ecosystems, we will develop future-oriented use of aquatic resources in a comprehensive manner, including water surface/underwater recreation and education and cultural dissemination. Based on scientific advice from project experts, local stakeholders will gain a deeper understanding of aquatic resources in cooperation with researchers and students from both Japan and Mauritius through participatory activities and field use of mobile terminals, which have shown remarkable growth in recent years. In this way, we will promote the spread of hybrid-style remote and local field guidance. In addition, we will enhance the capabilities of various value chain elements, from confirmation of fishing grounds, tour targets, fishing and use of fishery products, and processing and planning of options, to sales, and make proposals for a self-driven development model based on ecosystem services and local resources in Mauritius, in concert with local stakeholders.
