<Wild birds>

Birdlife International Tokyo is the Japanese branch of the international environmental NGO Birdlife International, which was founded in 1922 in the U.K. Under the slogan “For nature and people,” it engages in environmental conservation activities in close cooperation with partner NGOs in over 100 countries.

Project Summary

Through these activities, we will assess the mid-to-long-term impact of the oil spill caused by the Wakashio grounding on birds inhabiting Mauritius. And with the goal of establishing an on-site monitoring and conservation system, we will implement a monitoring survey, provide skill improvement training programs, analyze current conditions, and establish conservation strategies. We will also conduct a five-year survey based on the survey in FY2020 and assess and analyze impact of the oil spill on birds. We will introduce survey results to local communities through symposiums and so on and help raise their awareness. In addition, we will improve the survey capabilities of local staff and enhance their survey structure by building cooperative relations with local government agencies and NGOs, which were established through the FY2020 survey, and we believe these efforts will set the stage for continued monitoring after the project ends. Furthermore, based on the survey and analysis results and considering the insights of several highly experienced experts on bird life, we believe we can make a significant contribution to long-term waterfowl conservation in Mauritius by studying and establishing the waterfowl conservation strategy, which to date has not garnered much attention.
