Mauritian Wildlife Foundation

<Biology>

The Mauritian Wildlife Foundation (MWF) is the largest non-governmental organisation (NGO) in Mauritius to be exclusively concerned with the conservation and preservation of the nation’s endangered plant and animal species.

Project Summary

Since 1985, Mauritian Wildlife Foundation has been restoring the ecosystem of Ile aux Aigrettes, a 26 Ha Nature Reserve in the Mahebourg Bay. We plant native and endemic (including Critically Endangered) species Invasive alien plants are removed, resulting in the regeneration of the native forest. This has allowed the reintroduction of endemic birds (Pink Pigeon, Mauritius Fody and Mauritius Olive White eye), reptiles Telfair's skink and Guenther's gecko) and seabird attraction The Wakashio oil spill in 2020 may have fragilized the ecosystem. The conservation work is even more important now to boost nature’s resilience. We request support to continue habitat restoration of Ile aux Aigrettes via native species planting, invasive plant (e.g. false acacia) and animal control (Madagascar Tenrec, Asian House Crows) to enable seabird reestablishment and in parallel, benefit endemic birds and reptiles.
