Ecosystem Restoration Alliance Indian Ocean

<Forest>

ERA is an NGO dedicated to ecosystem conservation and community engagement in Mauritius. Adopting a “ridge to reef” approach, it works to protect diverse habitats—from forests to coastal areas including mangroves—while promoting sustainable solutions through environmental education and coexistence with agriculture.

Project Summary

This project aims to restore ecosystems within the Mountain Reserve that connects the Baie du Cap area and Black River Gorges National Park in southwestern Mauritius. With the disappearance of primary forests and less than 1% of high-quality forest cover remaining, the island’s ecosystems are extremely vulnerable. Through detailed field surveys focusing on vegetation and topography, the project will assess the feasibility and impact of replanting endemic species. Based on the findings, a vegetation distribution map and restoration plan will be developed. After obtaining permission from the Forestry Services, we will create a vegetation distribution map and restoration plan based on the survey results to proceed with the removal of invasive species and reforestation. The project also seeks to engage private landowners in dialogue to promote participation in conservation activities and climate adaptation, aiming for long-term biodiversity protection.
